La Loge formed in 2007 when Daragh Beirne drunkenly mentioned to Lynne Breivik that he was in the market for a vocalist. Rehearsals duly commenced and, once the hangovers cleared, the intrepid duo realized that they might be on to something. The first year was spent writing and experimenting, gradually evolving a sound by pilfering their favourite bits from other peoples’ stuff. This they accomplished by piling all their Cd's on the floor and smashing them up with a hammer of pure enthusiasm before sticking the pieces back together in no particular order with the sellotape of inspiration. Their philosophy is "Musically, whether on bluesy piano or acoustic guitar driven numbers, or more noisy meanderings, the guiding principle of La Loge’s music is stew. A good song should be like a good stew. Simple and satisfying with plenty of meaty bits, but not to be consumed without first donning a napkin."
RockStar Weekly had the chance to talk to La Loge.
Can you tell us about the band La Loge?
We're cousins. Daragh played in several bands before trying to do his own stuff. Lynne sent him a tape of her singing, and it took off from there. With a lot of help from our old friend, red wine.
How did you get together?
Alcohol. Being cousins helped.
According to your MySpace page it looks like each band member plays more than one instrument. That’s okay when you’re in the studio, what are your plans when you play gigs or tour. Obviously Gerat won’t be able to play the drums and bass.
"Gerat" is a rhythm machine, so he'll be grand with playing drum and bass together. That's why we bought him, really.
You have your debut EP out called ‘Black & White Blues’. That must be exciting!
It kind of is. It's very DIY, so we'll see how it goes. It's very nice of you to ask us about it though... we're a bit crap at interviews.
What were your inspiration and/or theme behind the EP.?
None whatsoever. Just stuck a bunch of songs we like together. Honestly!
Is there a meaning behind the name La Loge? How did you come-up with the name?
La Loge is a painting by Renoir. We had a print of it on the wall and we needed a band name, so we went with that. It also means a box in a theatre or an alcove, so that works well too (hopefully!!)
Your MySpace page says your inspirations are Keith Richards and Britney Spears. Why and who else inspires you.
Eddy Current Suppression Ring. Especially the song 'Which Way to Go'
What’s next for you?
God knows... more tunes hopefully, hopefully we'll avoid the craic pipe.
Thanks you for your time.
You're welcome. Thank you so much for taking an interest in us. Hope you liked the songs.
Love, Lynne & Daragh.
