PNE - 100 Years Of Fun

Wide Mouth Mason Ready To Rock Vancouver

Interview by Avril Savoie
Exclusive to Rockstar Weekly

The Saskatchewan band Wide Mouth Mason is getting ready for their show at the Venue in Vancouver on Thursday, Oct. 1 - one of the few performances this year.

Wide Mouth Mason has sold more than 250,000 CD, wrote the 2003 Grey Cup song, became the first group to break China in 2002 and they've opened for bands like AC/DC and The Rolling Stones.

Wide Mouth Mason hasn’t released a CD since 2005, however they are working on several things that will be out next year. "We are currently working on a live album and DVD to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of last time we performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival which should be out mid November and we have been working on new material for an album. We have recorded about three quarters of it . That should be out next summer.” says Shaun (lead vocals and guitarist).

Check out the interview and discover how their Saskatchewan homeland has influenced the band and what you can expect from their show on Oct. 1st.

Being from Regina myself, I have to ask this. Wide Mouth Mason is from Saskatchewan. Was it harder to get recognized having Saskatoon as your home base instead of Toronto or Vancouver?

Was there ever thoughts of packing up and moving?

Did growing up in Saskatchewan influence your music and career at all?

How did the band get together?

You guys are known for your energy at your live performances. After 2,000 shows, has that changed at all?

You guys have accomplished some pretty cool thing. I wanted to ask about a couple of them and get your thoughts.

- The Grey Cup song from 2003

- Was writing that song difficult or did it come easily to you?

- Being the first group to break China in 2002

- Selling a quarter of a million CDs

- Opening for AC/DC and The Rolling Stones

You said that you had hostile audiences?

I’ve seen interviews with Safwan talking about Canadian copyright law. Do you feel as strong as him about the digital age and Canada’s laws regarding it?

There hasn’t been a new Wide Mouth CD since 2005, and I’ve heard that there is going to be a live album and DVD?

Was there a moment when you were contemplating not doing Wide Mouth anymore?

We’re excited to see you guys back in Vancouver in a few days for the only concert date that’s listed on your website. What can fans expect from that show?

Do you make-up songs when you’re onstage at the concert?

I know it’s also a name of a jar, but wanted to ask about how you actually chose the name of the band.
