Queensryche's Geoff Tate Talks American Soldier |
|
Interview by Avril Savoie
Exclusive to Rockstar Weekly![]() ![]() The foundations for Queensrÿche began in the early 1980s. Guitarist Michael Wilton and drummer Scott Rockenfield were members of a band called Cross+Fire, who covered songs from popular heavy metal bands such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Before long Cross+Fire added guitarist Chris DeGarmo and bassist Eddie Jackson to their lineup, and changed their name to The Mob. The Mob, who were without a singer, recruited Geoff Tate to sing for them at a local rock festival. At the time, Tate was already in a band called Babylon. After Babylon broke up Tate performed a few shows with The Mob, but left because he was not interested in performing heavy metal. In 1981, The Mob put together sufficient funds to record a demo tape. Once again, Tate was enlisted to help. The group recorded four songs - "Queen of the Reich," "Nightrider," "Blinded" and "The Lady Wore Black." The group brought their demo to various labels and were rejected by all of them. Tate also was still committed to staying in his then-current band, Myth. At the urging of their new manager, The Mob changed their name to Queensrÿche (reportedly inspired by the first song on their demo). From there on, the rest is history. RockStar Weekly sat down with singer Geoff Tate to discuss the new CD , the concept album American Soldier, which we surprisingly found out was based on his father. Queensryche has a passion for creating concept albums and Tate was reported to have researched the new CD by talking with several American war veterans. Tate also sat down to discuss the popular Operation Mindcrime album and tells the story of how it was written in Montreal, Canada. What was the inspiration to make the American Soldier CD? I read that you interviewed veterans over the last few years for input. That seems like a big undertaking. The real soldiers must have been amazing to talk to. They are the worlds true heroes. Was there one story that really stuck out and became one of the American Soldier songs? You worked with Jason Slater again. Hes almost become a member of the band in a way. What is it about concept albums that attracts you? Being Canadian I have to ask. I heard Operation Mindcrime was developed while you were in Montreal. Was the experience in Montreal that crazy that it inspired Operation Mindcrime? Was it a challenge to convince the record company that a concept album was going to work? Was it a long process? My husband remembers watching you guys with KISS in 1984. Does it feel different to be in the band now as compared to back then? Do you feel the 80s music coming back? We had a chance to talk with Pamela last week. She fondly recalls everything shes done with the band. Is she a bit like a sister to you guys? He hasnt been a full member since 1998, but has appeared here and there. So what really happened with Chris? Youre hitting the road again how long will the tour last and where do you plan to go this round? |
