Cornish youth music charity Livewire are ploughing ahead with their campaign to beat Simon Cowell to number one in the UK charts with their cover of Girlshool’s ‘Emergency’. The 1980s hit single due to be released worldwide in mid-March on Steve Vai’s record label ‘Favored Nations’ aims to raise much needed funds for the victims of the Haiti Earthquake.
The idea to raise money for those suffering the aftermath of the earthquake came solely from Livewire’s young people who are aged between 10 and 20 years old and have a passion for music. They hope to raise enough money to leave a lasting legacy in Haiti and endeavour to rebuild a school as well as donating to charities such as ShelterBox.
The campaign to get the single released and indeed to number one in the charts has the full support of Girlschool as well as Black Sabbath’s producer Mike Exeter and others giving it the final tweak before it hits the shelves. Motorhead’s Lemmy and Ex-Rainbow singer Graham Bonnet will also be adding some vocals to the track with world famous guitarist Steve Vai adding guitar along with Guns N Roses founder Tracii Guns. The legendary Rudy Sarzo will also be adding some bass to the anticipated hit single.
The single will be available for download on iTunes and limited edition CD’s.
When asked about the song choice for this single, Girlschool singer/guitarist Kim McAuliffe said, "Emergency! Yeah, speaks for itself, doesn't it? It is a bloody emergency out there, and will be for a long time yet!" She continued to say, " As a band, we all feel quite honoured to be a part of this project and offer our full support to the youngsters and team at Livewire. Young people in this country trying to help youngsters in another, shattered, country , by means of Rock music, that's great! Rock may not be able to change the world, but it sure can make a difference! We all hope that they raise enough money to leave a lasting legacy in Haiti."
Speaking of the work in progress single, 14 year-old bass player, Izzi Lundstrom said: "It's all great fun; it's like a massive band. Music unites people. Go and check out Girlschool's Emergency on YouTube, it's a great song. If you like it, download our version when it's released and all the money goes to Haiti, such a good cause."
Project Coordinator, Andy Rance said: “We wish Simon Cowell’s pop song all the best, but we’re offering a rock alternative for those people who like music with a bit of life. This is an awesome opportunity for around 50 young musicians from Livewire to work alongside some fantastic people within the music industry and to do something life changing. Young people often get seen as a problem when actually not all of them are. We want to leave a lasting legacy out there in Haiti. We are not a rich charity, all we can offer is Rock music, but that’s something we are very good at. If we can raise enough money to rebuild or build a school and support some charities we will be really happy.”
