PNE - 100 Years Of Fun

Nelson Returns Thankful For Lack Of Grunge

The legacy of the Nelson family truly lives on with the Nelson brothers (Gunner and Mathew). Like their father, Ricky, and Ozzie and Harriet before him, Gunner and Matthew became chart toppers with their debut album After the Rain which featured the No.1 hit (Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection, and top ten singles After the Rain and More Than Ever.

When Grunge hit in the 90s, they didn’t disappear from the music seen as some bands had done, they just migrated.

"We went to Europe and Asia, kept our records going, started our own label, and released 10 albums in a 10 year period of time. We just kept thing going, kept having No. 1’s overseas. And it wasn’t until very recently that a lot of our music started to come back into fashion. We were happy, we were making music, and we certainly didn’t quit what we were doing, but no one really heard about it in the States” says Gunner.

The brothers have recently signed with Frontiers Records in Europe to record and release an original sequel to their debut Nelson album called Lighting Strikes Twice. Gunner said that the main challenge with this new record was to "record it as if Nirvana had never been signed and we had been allowed to go back into the studio and do what we do.”

Along with Lightning Strikes Twice, Nelson will be releasing a live album that was recorded during the After the Rain tour and an After the Rain demo CD which will include some unreleased songs, as well as rare demo tracks.

Gunner sat down with RockStar Weekly and recalled among other things, the early 90’s, the coming of grunge, where his famous locks of hair went, and what charity he loves to work with.

No other family in music history has had three generations of success – is family history important for you?

To a certain extent you ended up like your father – being a bit of a teen idol at a young age.

How did you cope with the fame at such a young age?

Did you father prepare you for anything?

Now that you’re older, how do you look back on the early performing days?

You had great success in the early 90s and then there wasn’t much mass media talk about Nelson after that. What happened at that point?

Your albums are very positive for the most part, is that a conscious effort?

Do you think there is there a resurgence of that early 90s sound coming back?

What is Nelson like at this point? Is it the same band as the one we remember from the early 90s?

Can you tell us about the new album?

What else is in store you guys?

You probably get asked a lot and it’s been gone for a while, but what happened to the hair?

That’s a great cause to loose your hair to.

Tell me about the Ricky Nelson Remembered shows.

How did you come about your charity work with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital?

With the new album out, I imagine you will be going on tour?

Will we get to see Nelson in Canada?
